German Bergstutzen (Mountain Rifle), 8x57JR cal. single shot rifle.   Serial #1036, mfg. Germany in 1924.  Good condition.  24” barrel has very good bore with strong rifling.  Barrel has full-length matted solid rib with gold bead front sight and two-leaf rear with integral claw mounts for scope.  Barrel has 85% finish with some fine surface corrosion, dated: “9/24”.   Breech area is engraved: “Herold, Eingtr. Schutzm.” on either side.  Receiver has little remaining finish with beautiful fine scroll engraving and fine stippling behind breech.  Trigger guard has fine scroll engraving.  Double set triggers.  Stock and forearm have good original finish and checkering, European-style cheek piece with few light handling marks. Finely checkered butt plate.  European narrow sling swivels.   Gun locks up tightly.  Trigger mechanism does not work properly and will need gunsmith attention.  A beautiful, elegant German stalking rifle!  C&R OK.
