Marlin Model 1881, .40-60 cal. lever action rifle. Serial #7890, mfg. 1884. Antique. Fair condition. All gray rifle, no finish. Some areas turning to patina and some protected areas with corrosion, so it looks like long ago it was buffed up and left. Some fading blue on bolt top. Bore is dark, but I do not see big pits - could really respond to some work. Wood has been sanded long ago and has marks - is now blondish looking. Appears to be all here and operates fine. Crescent butt. Buckhorn rear sight does not have elevator. Post front sight. Is marked merely ".40 cal." on barrel (.40-60 cal.). Lever operates well. Hammer cocks and drops. Great display piece as is or a fantastic restoration project on this big frame and big caliber! Much potential here. We don't get many of these. Wyoming rifle. The famous Model 60 that was Smith's first stainless revolver - it was immediately shuttled over privately to Vietnam where it was resistance to the corrosive elements of the jungle. Very good bore. Some minutes scratches in the stainless finish. Fixed sights. Modern soft rubber S&W grips, but they had faded quite a bit - still feel fine. Only detration is this snubby needs a new trigger return spring as it hangs sometimes when indexing. Easy fix. Gunrunner West item.

Blondish stock has the bolt disassembly holes in the buttstock, handguards (a little loose) like the M98 and M98 style rear sights. Post front sight. Steel buttplate. A very valuable feature is the vintage Royal marked tool leather carrying case that hold both parts of the gun and then a cleaning case strapped down on the back. Handle is off. The usual crack in the bottom of the forearm. Nice checkering. Gold trigger has most of its shine worn off. Super candidate for a new reblue and stock finish and you would have a mint gun! Just a few nicks in the varnish that could easily be repaired. 28" ribbed barrels have excellent bores. Double triggers. Extractors. Pistol grip. Pressed checkering. 3" magnum chambers. Top lever over right - hasn't been shot much at all. Hard butt. Metal front bead. Only detraction is the former owner etched his SS above the serial number and the bottom of the receiver - hard to see either and could be easily corrected. Finish on the barrel and receiver is an uneven 85% . Stock is Italian military marked in good condition. The wood is light colored Canvas GI sling is unmarked. Frame and slide match each other and barrel and locking block are matched to each other. Standard officer's issue in WWII. 5" barrel has a good bore with light frosting, fixed military sights. 90% blue finish with high edge wear and some spotty finish loss on the slide and grip straps. Brown bakelite grips are in very good condition. War time P-38 magazine is in very good condition. No import marks. Many of these saw hard service on the Eastern Front. C&R OK.
